Late Victorian Maid of Honor Dress

History

At a proper Victorian wedding, the bridesmaid's dress would be very similar to the bride's, sometimes differing only in color and a few embellishments. On many occasions one could not tell the bride from the maid of honor! In this case, Lisa is the Maid of Honor in the champagne colored dress above. This is an example of late Victorian style, with a small bustle back. Some gowns from this era had even more trim as this was a time of extravagance.

Suzanne's wedding was celebrated at Howick Historical Village, in Howick, Auckland New Zealand, and we were proud to make this dress for Lisa to help celebrate Suzanne's special day.

Garment Details

The dress pictured here was made from champagne silk, trimmed with a small floral Venice lace trim. The bodice is buttoned down the front with pearl buttons and has a high collar. The skirt and apron fastens with hooks and eyes in the back. The entire outfit consists of a bodice, underskirt, and apron and was worn over a pillow bustle and 7-gore petticoat. Other materials that could be used would be satin, silk, linen, perhaps even an organza overlay.  The front apron might also have been lace. This dress uses between 7 and 8 yards of material.

Late Victorian Wedding Dress

History

The late Victorian period was a time of excess, in architecture, in decorating the home, and also with the more elaborate trims and lace for more formal dresses. Wedding parties still followed the tradition of the bridesmaid's dress looking very much like the bride's dress however, as it got closer to the turn of the century, the tradition of the bride wearing white became more common. Our model, Tiffany, wanted a late Victorian dress for her period wedding taking place in the beautiful chapel at the Ohio Historical Society's Ohio Village in Columbus, Ohio.

Garment Details

The material used in this dress was an off-white polyester crepe material with natural color Venice Lace trim. There were three styles of Venice lace used in the bodice and skirt, as well as a pre-pleated cotton and lace trim at the bottom of the skirt. The Bodice has a portrait neckline that is edged with the pleated trim and Venice lace accent and three-quarter length sleeves. Pearl buttons run down the front to the pointed bottom and the back has a short peplum that sits on top of the bustle. Bonig was used extensively to create a true reproduction look. The skirt was a basic 7 gore skirt with two rows of pleated trim around the bottom. Both it and the apron fasten in the back with hooks and eyes. The apron also has an edging consisting of two different styles of Venice lace and has the added comfort of a simple once-over tie before cascading into the two "tails" down the back. The apron was self lined so that the tails would fall just right with the lace showing on either front or back. Our bride was also outfitted with the "proper undergarments" consisting of a corset, flounced petticoat and gathered bustle.

Modern Wedding Dress

Garment Details

Our bride wanted a simple wedding dress for an intimate garden wedding. She had visited several bridal shops, and was not happy with the "off the shoulder" and strapless gowns she was offered. She contacted us, and the result was this custom made wedding dress, satin with chiffon in mint color.
