Colonial / Pioneer |

HistoryWe all have heard the story of Betsy Ross and how George Washington, George Ross and Robert Morris commissioned her to produce a flag for the Colonial troops to rally around. At first, Mr. Washington thought the stars should be 6 pointed until Betsy suggested and cut out the now well known 5 pointed star. The 13 stars in a circle on a field of blue and 13 bars of red and white symbolize the original colonies and have become synonymous with both the United States and Betsy Ross. Thus, according to the legend, our grand flag was born on June 14, 1777.Garment DetailsOur model wears the outfit of a middle class colonial woman. While this outfit is not completely authentic in the print of the material, the style is typical of the mid-1700’s. It is comprised of a bodice, skirt, apron, fischu**, and mob cap. The dress was made to be worn over a petticoat and, for more formal occasions, a pannier. Made of brocades and silks and worn with the side panniers it would make a fine colonial ball gown. The dress as pictured was made with 100% cotton print. The bodice and skirt were made from a colonial blue cotton and white star print and the apron from a red background with gold star print, also in 100% cotton. The fischu is white muslin and the mob cap is made from the same red and gold star print with a white lining so it could be turned inside out for more wearing. **Fischu (pronounced fish-oo) – this was a simple, usually muslin triangle that was approximately 36” to 40” square and was worn around the neck for “modesty” purposes.
